Lot 4759
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.23 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Ticinum, irregular mint, after 319. CONSTA-NVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. VIRTVS EXERCIT / S T Two captives seated at base of vexillum inscribed VOT / XX. Cf. RIC 114 (for possible prototype). A beautiful, very charming imitation. Extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, privately acquired from Spink & Son on 2 September 1999.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. The closest official coin is RIC 114 (Ticinum) which, however, shows Constantine in a helmeted bust (type D2).
